How To Outperform Your Competitors

A guide to 'collaborative learning'

Context

Did you know that learning organizations consistently outperform organizations that learn more slowly?

The best organizations in the world are world-class because they learn faster than their competition.

By prioritizing learning, they show:

  • Increased adaptability

  • High employee engagement and morale

  • Talent attraction and retention

  • Improved productivity and efficiency

  • A culture of continuous improvement

How do they learn faster than others?

The best management thinkers of our time from MIT found four principles all learning organizations have in common.

I arranged them as a “flywheel of collaborative learning” for you.

Design your organization around these principles to increase your capacity for effective action.

1. A culture of reflection

Continuously reflect and re-align align your strategy to your purpose.

Doing is great - but doing what matters is even better.

How well do you reflect on your core purpose?

How often do you realign your strategy?

Does your strategy continue to fulfill your organization's purpose?

2. Knowledge creation

Build knowledge at all levels.

Knowledge is an organization's capacity for effective action.

How effective are you in increasing this capacity for action?

3. Shared knowledge

Ensure that knowledge is shared.

Are you tapping into our collective intelligence or creating silos of knowledge?

How can you make sure this knowledge is shared?

4. Relevant knowledge

Make sure that the knowledge you create contributes directly to your mission.

It's great that you know so much about the last Taylor Swift album… but does this knowledge make a difference?

How relevant is the knowledge you are creating to your strategy?

World-class organizations use the flywheel of learning organizations to continuously increase their capacity for effective action.

Summary

Design your organization around these four principles to "outlearn" the competition:

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow.

Learn as if you were to live forever.”

Mahatma Gandhi

I hope this will inspire a greater commitment to reflection and learning in your company.
